Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 26, 2007鈥敽=巧缜 Nursing Program has received $534,588 from the California Endowment. These monies put the 海角社区CI Nursing Program over the million-dollar mark in grants and contributions received for the program.
The $534,588 grant received from the California Endowment to establish the Nursing Pipeline Project will focus on serving underrepresented minority students by academically preparing them to apply for the Nursing Program and to be successful 海角社区CI students.
鈥淭his Nursing Pipeline Program is a solid strategy focused on increasing the number of qualified students from underrepresented minorities who successfully compete for admission into a nursing program,鈥 explained Karen Jensen, associate professor and director of the Nursing Program at 海角社区CI.
The California Endowment money creates a forum for the Nursing Program at 海角社区CI to partner with local community organizations and schools in identifying students from the ethnically diverse population of Ventura County.
Since August, the program has received a total of $1,220,588 from the following sources: the California Endowment, six local hospitals, County of Ventura, and through the efforts of Congressman Elton Gallegly.
Six local hospitals: St. John鈥檚 Regional Medical Center, St. John鈥檚 Pleasant Valley Hospital, Ventura County Medical Center, Community Memorial Hospital, Los Robles Regional Medical Center, and Simi Valley Hospital, pooled resources and donated $400,000 to 海角社区CI鈥檚 Nursing Program. These contributions allowed 海角社区CI to admit 66 students into the Nursing Program this fall, which was twice the number originally planned.
The County of Ventura recently awarded $136,000 for the Nursing Program, and in September, Congressman Elton Gallegly obtained an additional $150,000 in Congressionally Directed Grants just under $200,000 that was received through Gallegly鈥檚 leadership two years ago.
