This year鈥檚 Campus Reading Celebration book spans three generations where Revoyr uses the murder of聽four boys during the 1965 Watts riot as the pivot point for a moving, sometimes harrowing exploration of race relations among black, Japanese, and white residents of L.A. The Campus Reading Celebration provides an annual opportunity for the campus community and public to share in a common intellectual experience.
Revoyr was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and a white American father, and grew up in Tokyo, Wisconsin, and Los Angeles. In addition to Southland, a Los Angeles Times bestseller and 鈥淏est Book of 2003,鈥 she is the author of The Necessary Hunger, and The Age of Dreaming. Revoyr has been an Associate Faculty member at Antioch University, a Visiting Professor at Cornell University, and the Remsen Bird Visiting Writer at Occidental College. She has also worked for more than a decade in the fields of child welfare and public education.
The event is sponsored by the University鈥檚 Instructionally Related Activities Fund and by Associated Students Inc.
