Camarillo, Calif., Feb. 25, 2008鈥敽=巧缜 President Richard R. Rush has been named Educator of the Year by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce. The Educator of the Year award is part of the Camarillo Chamber鈥檚 Top Ten Community Awards, which honor 10 individuals and organizations that have made the Camarillo community a better place to live and do business.
Rush and the other Top Ten Award winners will be presented their awards at a gala event on Saturday, March 8. Tickets for this event must be purchased in advance, and can be purchased by contacting the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce at 805-484-4383. This is the Chamber鈥檚 41st year of presenting these awards.
鈥淚t is an honor to receive this award. I have profound gratitude for the support the Camarillo community has given to me and the work it has done to build Cal State Channel Islands into the University it is today,鈥 Rush said. 鈥淭hank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me and my colleagues to create your University.鈥
Rush was appointed President of 海角社区 by the 海角社区 Board of Trustees and assumed his duties in June 2001. He has worked relentlessly and diligently to serve the people of Camarillo and this region through providing increased educational opportunities. As an academic leader, his vision and motivation is unparalleled. He has built a campus of more than 3,500 students, employing nearly 700 employees. He has personally interviewed and hired all tenure-track faculty, selecting 85 successful candidates from an international pool of about 13,100. Under his leadership, the University gained accreditation from WASC in a remarkable five years.
鈥淒r. Rush鈥檚 commitment to collegiality and his personal warmth have created an atmosphere unique in higher education, where divisions work with one another positively and cooperatively in active shared governance,鈥 said Therese Eyermann, Special Assistant to the President.
Winners of the Top Ten Awards are nominated by members of the Camarillo community and selected by a panel of judges. Winners of this year鈥檚 awards were announced at a Camarillo City Council meeting in late January.
