Camarillo, Calif., March 19, 2008鈥擳he Center for Community Engagement and the Center for Multicultural Engagement at 海角社区 with the support of many campus, community organizations and members is hosting a three-day series of events to honor C茅sar E. Ch谩vez鈥檚 legacy of service to humanity. Events are scheduled for Tuesday, April 1 through Thursday, April 3 on the 海角社区CI campus and at Caf茅 on A in Oxnard.
This series of events is supported by funding from Instructionally Related Activities and the following event sponsors: Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics at 海角社区CI, Extended Education at 海角社区CI, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at 海角社区CI, MEChA (a student club), 海角社区CI Student Programming, Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation, Barbara Macri-Ortiz, and Carmen Ramirez.

Note:聽 Limited parking is available for the events taking place on campus and is $6 for a daily permit. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo with bus service to and from the campus until 10 p.m. Riders should board the 海角社区CI Vista bus. Fare is $1 each way per rider. Complimentary parking is being offered for the Tuesday, April 1 event scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. attendees are asked to use campus lots A10 and SH 2.
Tuesday, April 1
Event: Sacrifice, Opportunity, and Hope
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Where: Malibu Hall 100, on the 海角社区CI campus
This event is a panel discussion exploring C茅sar Ch谩vez鈥檚 work with United Farm workers and personal experiences of working with C茅sar Ch谩vez. The panel will feature Frank Barajas, Associate Professor of History at 海角社区CI; Barbara Macri-Ortiz, Oxnard lawyer and activist; and Lupe Anguiano, community activist. Refreshments will be served.
Tuesday, April 1
Event: Celebrating a Legacy of Service and Conviction
Time: 7 to 9 p.m.
Where: Malibu Hall 100, on the 海角社区CI campus
United Farm Workers co-founder and activist Dolores Huerta will speak about her lifelong commitment to service and the importance of individual and community activism. Included in this event will be performances by Inlakech Ballet Folklorico Program and local artist/performer Manuel Unzueta. Food and refreshments will be served. Parking is complimentary for this event only in lots A10 and SH2.
Wednesday, April 2
Event: Voice of a Generation
Time: 7 to 9 p.m.
Where: Cafe on A, 438 South A Street, Oxnard
Nationally recognized Chicano poet Paul Flores will visit Oxnard and speak his rhyme. Flores, a past performer on HBO's 鈥淒ef Poetry Jam,鈥 will weave spoken word, theater, and hip-hop around issues of social justice. Food and refreshments will be served.
Thursday, April 3
Event: Spoken Word Performance Workshop
Time: 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Where: The Hub, on the 海角社区CI campus
Learn from nationally recognized spoken word poet Paul Flores as he leads a workshop for those who want to learn more about performance poetry, hip hop activism and using their own words to create social change and impact.
Thursday, April 3
Event: Rhyme for a Reason: Social Justice Poetry Slam
Time: 7 to 9 p.m.
Location: The Hub at the 海角社区CI campus
Don't Mince Your Words, Deliver Your Message, Come Speak Your PEACE at the Social Justice Poetry Slam. Come for a night of words, music and fun. Open microphone or sign up at the Multicultural and Women's & Gender Student Center. Master of ceremonies will be spoken word poet, Paul Flores. Food and refreshments will be served.
