海角社区CI October Events Include Election Related Lectures, Campus to Congress, Renowned Guest Speakers - News Releases

Camarillo, Calif., Sept. 30, 2008鈥敽＝巧缜� has several events scheduled for the month of October. The following information details some of the events faculty, staff, and students have organized and scheduled that will be happening both on and off the 海角社区CI campus. Thursday, Oct. 2鈥擲torytime at the John Spoor Broome Library
The John Spoor Broome Library at 海角社区 will host Storytime every Thursday during the month of October beginning on Thursday, Oct. 2. Storytime will be held from 3 to 3:30 p.m. in the Children鈥檚 section at the Library. Storytime books will be read by Miss Shriya, soon-to-be-10 years old, and is part of the Broome Library鈥檚鈥渒ids reading to kids program.鈥�

Dates for October Storytimes are: Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30.

This event is free and open to the campus community and public. Limited parking is available on campus and is $6 for a daily permit. Follow signs to designated event parking areas. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station /Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo with shuttle service to and from the campus. Riders should board the 海角社区CI VISTA Bus and the fare is $1 each way. Buses arrive and depart from the Camarillo Metrolink Station every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Saturday, Oct. 4鈥擭inth-Annual President鈥檚 Dinner
The outdoor plaza of the John Spoor Broome Library on the 海角社区 campus will be the site of the Ninth-Annual President鈥檚 Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 4. The event is the premier annual fund-raising event for the University. The gala event will feature fine dining, live early-evening entertainment by Grant Geissman and later music by the Platinum Groove. The presentation of the prestigious 海角社区 Lagomarsino Award to recipient William J. Kearney also will be a highlight of the event.

This event is admission by ticket only. A limited number of tickets remain available to the public at $300 each.

Tuesday, Oct. 7鈥斺€楬ow the Media Can Help You In Your Business鈥� Featuring Tim Gallagher
The Business Advisory Committee and the Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics will host Tim Gallagher鈥檚 presentation on 鈥淗ow the Media Can Help You In Your Business.鈥� Gallagher鈥檚 discussion will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Grand Salon on the 海角社区CI campus. Registration and the mixer for this event begin at 4:45 p.m.

Reservations are complimentary but are required for this event.

Gallagher is founder and president of Gallagher 20/20 Consulting, a Westlake Village firm specializing in reputation building designed to increase financial growth. Prior to establishing his consulting firm, Gallagher was in the news business for 29 years. He was editor of the Ventura County Star newspaper from 1995 to 2004 and publisher from 2004 to 2007. He has a broad knowledge of media practices and will talk about how the new media opportunities can help grow your business.

Tuesday, Oct. 7鈥擯residential Debate Watch and Analysis with 海角社区 Trustee Smith
The Political Science Program at 海角社区 will host C.R. Smith, a former speechwriter for Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and current 海角社区 Board of Trustees member, for an analysis of the presidential candidates鈥� debate on Oct. 7. The event will be held on campus in the John Spoor Broome Library in Room 1360 and will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a viewing of the debate with Smith鈥檚 analysis to follow. Smith is currently a Professor of Communication and the Chair of the Film and Electronic Arts at 海角社区 Long Beach.

Tuesday, Oct. 7鈥擬agdalen Hsu Li Performs at Islands Cafe
On Tuesday, Oct.聽 7, the musical sounds of Magdalen Hsu Li return to campus for a one-hour performance at the Islands Caf茅 from 6 to 7 p.m. The event is hosted by the Spectrum (A Queer/Straight Alliance) and the Multicultural and Women鈥檚 & Gender Student Center. During the performance, the Islands Caf茅 dinner special will be buy one dinner receive a second dinner at half price. Li will lead a discussion following her performance titled 鈥淒iversity without Boundaries.鈥� Li is one of the first openly out bi Chinese-American singer-songwriters in the United States. She also will share her experiences navigating life with Tourette鈥檚 syndrome.

The purpose of the Multicultural and Women's & Gender Student Center (MWGSC) is to educate students on issues of diversity and equality, to advocate for under-represented groups on campus, to affirm and celebrate the unique heritage of our students, to promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation for all peoples and cultures, to be a uniting force on campus, and to foster an environment that is emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually safe and beneficial to all areas of student life and development.

Wednesday, Oct. 8鈥斺€�18 Million Cracks in the Glass Ceiling: The Meaning of the 2008 Elections for Women鈥� Featuring Jean Schroedel
The Political Science Program at 海角社区 will host Jean Schroedel, author and Chair of the Politics and Poly Department at the School of Politics and Economics at Claremont Graduate University. Schroedel鈥檚 talk, 鈥�18 Million Cracks in the Glass Ceiling: The Meaning of the 2008 Elections for Women鈥� will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Room 1360 of the John Spoor Broome Library on campus. Her recent book, 鈥淚s the Fetus a Person? A Comparison of Policies Across the Fifty States,鈥� was awarded the American Political Science Association鈥檚 2001 Victoria Schuck Award.

Monday, Oct. 13鈥斺€楥ampaigns and Elections American Style: Observations about the 2008 Presidential and Congressional Elections鈥� Featuring James Thurber
The Political Science Program at 海角社区 will host James Thurber, Distinguished Professor of Government and Director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University in Washington, D.C., for a discussion beginning at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13. The event, 鈥淐ampaigns and Elections American Style: Observations about the 2008 Presidential and Congressional Elections,鈥� will be held on campus in Room 1360 of the John Spoor Broome Library. Thurber is a nationally-recognized expert on American electoral politics.

Wednesday, Oct. 15鈥擯residential Debate Viewing
The student-organized Political Action Club is hosting a viewing of the Presidential candidates鈥� debate beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15 on campus in Room 1360 of the John Spoor Broome Library. Following the debate, guest speakers will comment on the candidates鈥� presentations, take questions from the audience, and moderate discussion.

Monday, Oct. 20鈥擟ongress to Campus at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library
The Congress to Campus Program will include a public forum titled 鈥淐ongress, Bipartisanship, and Political Reform鈥� featuring former United States Congressmen Butler Derrick (D-SC) and Dennis Smith (R-OR) from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20. The event will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Museum and Library in Simi Valley, and Duke Blackwood, Executive Director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Museum and Library, will serve as moderator.

This event is free and open to the campus community and public.

The U. S. Association of Former Members of Congress created the Congress to Campus Program in an effort to improve college students' understanding of Congress and American government and to encourage them to consider careers in public service. The program sends bipartisan pairs of former Members of Congress - one Democrat and one Republican - to visit college, university, and community college campuses around the country.聽 The Congress to Campus program provides a distinctive, powerful and personal means to educate the next generation about American government, politics and public affairs.聽 The former Members provide students with insights into the realities of American democracy through sharing their real-life experiences as candidates and office holders.

This event is sponsored by the Political Science Program through a generous grant from Instructionally Related Activities Board.

Monday, Oct. 27鈥斺€楶artisanship in Modern American Politics鈥� Featuring Lance LeLoup
The Political Science Program at 海角社区 will host a presentation on 鈥淧artisanship in Modern American Politics鈥� by Lance LeLoup at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27 on campus in Room 1360 of the John Spoor Broome Library. LeLoup is a Professor of Political Science at Washington State University.

Wednesday, Oct. 29鈥斺€楨xploring the Last Biotic Frontier鈥� Featuring Nalini Nadkarni
On Wednesday, Oct. 29, Dr. Nalini Nadkarni will discuss forest canopy ecology and outreach during a presentation at 6 p.m. on the 海角社区CI campus in Malibu Hall 100. Nadkarni is known as 鈥淭he Queen of the Forest Canopy.鈥� She has been both a pioneer in forest canopy studies and in fostering the communication of canopy research among scientists and to the general public around the world. She is on the faculty at The Evergreen State College, in Olympia, Wash. and the adjunct faculty at the University of Washington.

Nadkarni鈥檚 research concerns the ecology of tropical and temperate forest canopies, particularly the roles that canopy-dwelling plants play in forests. She carries out field research in Monteverde, Costa Rica and in Washington State, supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Geographic Society. She recently expanded her outreach work by establishing the NSF-funded Research Ambassador Program, in which she trains other scientists to do outreach to non-traditional public audiences in non-traditional venues such as prisons, churches, skateboard parks, and rap music clubs. In collaboration with computer scientists and informatics experts, she is creating software and data management tools for canopy researchers.

Wednesday, Oct. 29鈥斺€楻ussia and Central Asia in Global Politics鈥� Featuring the Consul General of the Republic of Azerbaijan
Elin Suleymanov, Consul General of the Republic of Azerbaijan, will be on campus for a discussion titled 鈥淩ussia and Central Asia in Global Politics,鈥� at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29 in Room 1360 of the John Spoor Broome Library. The Consul General will speak about the geo-political realities unfolding in Central Asia, particularly vis-脿-vis states of the former Soviet Union and the Russian Federation. Suleymanov, an experienced diplomat and politician, will offer insight into the recent events that have transpired between Georgia and Russia and the threats to transit, exploration and the pumping of oil and gas from Central Asia to Europe, Israel, and the West.
