Jan. 17, 2025 – Professor of Chemistry Ahmed Awad, Ph.D. has accepted the position
of Faculty Director for Student Research.
After earning his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Ulm in Germany, he completed postdoctoral fellowships at Iowa State University and UC Santa Barbara before joining the faculty at º£½ÇÉçÇøCI in the fall of 2007. Professor Awad’s research focuses on the design and development of novel therapeutics for the potential treatment of cancer and bacterial infections.
He has extensive experience in mentoring student research at º£½ÇÉçÇøCI, including serving as a faculty mentor for the Summer SURF program since its inception in 2017, participating in the Miller Grant-funded projects, and teaching the UNIV 498 course twice. In addition, he has years of experience in teaching and implementing equity-minded High-Impact Practices (HIPs). Professor Awad has an impressive publication record, frequently including º£½ÇÉçÇøCI students as co-authors in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. He has secured numerous internal and external research grants to support his research program and serves as a co-principal investigator on two National Science Foundation projects, ADVANCE and AGEP, which aim to enhance representation, equity, and inclusion among STEM faculty.
Professor Awad’s vision for the program, commitment to our students and campus values, and his steadfast and successful research portfolio including many projects with students will be instrumental to leading the Student Research Office.
