º£½ÇÉçÇø

Hello to all campus community members!

Due to the successful implementation of Project PROMESAS activities over the past five years, the STEM Center tutoring services and related group study programs have been integrated into the expanded  Learning Resource Center in the Broome Library.

Please read the following announcement from Provost Mitch Avila:

"Dear Faculty and Students,

For the past five years, the º£½ÇÉçÇøCI community has benefitted from the great work of Project PROMESAS, a $6 million U.S. Department of Education, Title III, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI-STEM) grant.  Project PROMESAS has focused on strengthening academic support services for STEM disciplines and reducing achievement gaps for underrepresented and low-income students in STEM on our campus and in our local community. After much success, Project PROMESAS will be sunsetting this year. Happily, many of the grant’s activities will be continued on by various campus entities, as is the ultimate goal of every grant.

Specifically, we are thrilled to announce that STEM tutoring services will be continuing under the Learning Resource Center umbrella in the Broome Library. Since the inception of Project PROMESAS in 2016 the aim was to have better alignment of our campus’ academic student support services. Because of the great work and efforts of PROMESAS and LRC staff, the alignment of tutoring services has been possible. While efforts to integrate tutoring services began in 2019, they were interrupted by the pandemic. Fortunately, we are now able to continue with our efforts.  This integration of tutoring services will bring us closer to a campus Learning Commons model, with the Writing & Multiliteracy Center located in the Library as well.

The LRC is committed to building on the success of Project PROMESAS by providing expanded academic support services for STEM courses and robust programming for STEM student success. We wish to recognize the tremendous efforts, talent, and creativity of all those who have built such a successful and essential resource at º£½ÇÉçÇøCI, from Project ACCESO to Project PROMESAS. We are especially grateful for the expertise of our many faculty and staff members who have created the vision and best practices for a student-centered STEM community. This vision is intentional in its inclusion of and advancement for historically underrepresented students in STEM. Such collaboration will continue to be essential and a priority as we transition to a unified and holistic academic support center at º£½ÇÉçÇøCI.

For the coming Fall 2021 semester, the LRC will provide services in a hybrid format, with both traditional in-person and online Zoom tutoring services available. Over the next several years, we will continue to expand capacity in the Library and Learning Resources, including staff and permanent funding, to ensure the long term viability of this important project.

We celebrate the success and achievements of Project PROMESAS and we look forward to carrying the legacy of robust STEM academic support services forward into the future. Thank you to all who have made these critical services possible, and for the outstanding direction and leadership of the Project PROMESAS team and the SASEI Department!   We look forward to welcoming you all to the Learning Resource Center this fall!

 Sincerely,

Mitch Avila, Provost
