The STEM Success Integrative Learning Community (STEM LC) offers freshmen STEM students support in college by focusing on core college success skill sets, such as, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
What is a Learning Community?
A learning community is a cluster of two or more classes that a group of students take as a cohort. The STEM LC pairs two courses:
Fall
- ENGL 102 – Strategies for Successful College Writers (3 units, continues with ENGL 105 in the spring)
- UNIV 100 – University Life and College Success (1 unit)
Spring
- ENGL 105 – Composition and Rhetoric (3 units)
The Benefits
Members of the STEM LC:
- Are connected to encouraging and supportive instructors
- Receive support and guidance from a Peer Mentor (who is a º£½ÇÉçÇøCI STEM major)
- Participate in outside class activities, known as Dolphin Interests Groups (DIGs) facilitated by the Peer Mentor
- DIGs help students by emphasizing what is learned in their UNIV 100 class and also introduce students to more on campus resources
- Fulfill General Education units:
- Area E (Lifelong Learning & Self Development) with ENGL 102 and
- Area A-2 (English Writing) with ENGL 105
